An exceptionally rare and highly collectible Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 6262 in stainless steel, featuring the coveted Paul Newman “exotic” dial. A rare transitional manual-winding Daytona offered watch only.
An exceptionally rare and highly collectible Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 6262 in stainless steel, distinguished by its coveted Paul Newman dial. Produced only for a brief transitional period around 1970–1971, the reference 6262 occupies a special place in Daytona history, bridging the earliest manual-wind references and the later generations that would follow. Among vintage Rolex collectors, it is widely regarded as one of the rarest and most desirable Paul Newman Daytona references.
The defining feature of the watch is its unmistakable Paul Newman “exotic” dial, with contrasting light sub-dials, Art Deco-style numerals, distinctive square markers within the registers, and the curved red Daytona signature above 6 o’clock. This dial gives the watch a far more graphic and expressive personality than a standard Daytona, creating the bold visual identity that has made these references so admired across generations of collectors. The fixed steel tachymeter bezel and classic pump chronograph pushers further preserve the pure, balanced character of the early Daytona.
Reference 6262 is also important mechanically, as it introduced the upgraded Valjoux calibre 727, beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour and representing a meaningful evolution over the earlier calibre 722. Housed in stainless steel and offered watch only, this example stands as a particularly compelling opportunity to acquire a rare transitional Daytona with exceptional collector appeal, historical importance, and one of the most legendary dial configurations in all of vintage Rolex collecting.
