Grönefeld 1941 Principia Stainless Steel — Ice Blue Dial, Full Set, November 2023
A highly refined expression of independent Dutch watchmaking, the Grönefeld 1941 Principia in stainless steel pairs restrained proportions with one of the most beautifully finished automatic movements in its class. In light blue, the watch takes on an especially fresh and elegant character, giving the model a softer, more contemporary presence without losing the architectural sharpness that defines the 1941 case.
The 1941 Principia occupies a distinctive place within the work of Bart and Tim Grönefeld. As the brothers’ first automatic three-hand watch, it was conceived not as a simplification of their earlier pieces, but as a concentrated expression of their standards in case-making, movement architecture, and hand finishing. Grönefeld describes the model as featuring an extensively hand-finished movement visible through a sapphire caseback, while independent coverage noted that, despite its time-only format, the watch remains Grönefeld “from head to toe” in finishing and execution.
Its stainless-steel case measures 39.5 mm in diameter and 10.5 mm in height, proportions that give the watch an unusual versatility on the wrist. The shape is one of the defining strengths of the reference: sculptural yet controlled, with concave recesses and convex surfaces that lend the case a strong sense of depth and light play. Grönefeld itself describes the 1941 case, at 39.5 mm by 10.5 mm, as “the epitome of elegance, courtesy of its discreet mien.”
The dial is crafted in solid sterling silver and offered here in light blue, with polished applied baton hour markers. That combination is central to the appeal of this version. Less conventional than silver or rhodium, and more restrained than salmon, the ice-blue tone gives the Principia a subtle individuality that suits the watch especially well in steel. Grönefeld’s official description notes that the light blue dial is part of an array of solid sterling silver dials, and that the turquoise and light blue versions are paired with polished applied baton hour markers.
Powering the watch is the automatic calibre G-06, offering a 56-hour power reserve. While mechanically straightforward in concept, the movement is very much the point: a hand-finished automatic calibre executed with the seriousness usually reserved for more complicated watchmaking. Through the sapphire caseback, the Principia reveals the level of care for which the Grönefeld brothers have become known, making the watch as compelling from the back as it is from the front.
This example is offered in like-new condition and accompanied by its full set, box, and warranty card dated November 2023. Complete, fresh, and from one of independent watchmaking’s most respected names, it represents a particularly attractive opportunity to acquire the 1941 Principia in one of its most elegant and wearable configurations.
Note on rarity:
While the 1941 Principia is not a numbered limited edition, Grönefeld’s overall annual production is understood to be around 70 watches across all references, making output for any single dial configuration exceptionally small. The light blue dial is one of five standard Principia dial options and appears only rarely on the market, suggesting genuinely limited real-world availability.
